Position Title: Special Education Teacher
Location: Union East Elementary School
Reports To: Building Principal
Employment Status: Full-time, 10-month position

Position Summary

The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The teacher collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure students receive appropriate instructional support that promotes academic achievement, independence, and social-emotional growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in compliance with federal, state, and district regulations.

  • Provide direct and indirect instructional support to students with disabilities in inclusive, resource, or self-contained settings as assigned.

  • Adapt curriculum, instructional strategies, and materials to meet the individual needs of students.

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and differentiated instruction.

  • Conduct ongoing assessments and collect data to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.

  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress reports and required special education records.

  • Participate in Committee on Special Education (CSE) meetings and contribute to the development and review of IEPs.

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and program implementation.

  • Implement positive behavior supports and strategies to support student success.

  • Coordinate with related service providers such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and counselors.

  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school activities.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, lunchrooms, playgrounds, and during school activities as assigned.

  • Support and implement school and district policies and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field (Master’s degree preferred).

  • Valid State Teaching Certification in Special Education.

  • Knowledge of special education law, IEP development, and instructional strategies for students with disabilities.

  • Strong classroom management, collaboration, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with students with diverse learning and behavioral needs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the classroom and school environment for extended periods.

  • Ability to assist students with mobility or physical needs as required.

  • Occasional lifting of instructional materials or assisting students as necessary.

Work Environment

  • Classroom and school setting with frequent interaction with students, staff, and families.

The Elementary Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality instruction that supports the academic, social, and emotional development of elementary students. The teacher creates a safe and engaging classroom environment, implements district curriculum, assesses student progress, and collaborates with colleagues and families to support student success.

  • Plan and deliver standards-based lessons aligned with district curriculum and state learning standards.

  • Create a positive, safe, and inclusive classroom environment that supports student learning.

  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with disabilities and English language learners.

  • Assess student learning through formative and summative assessments and use data to inform instruction.

  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.

  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, behavior, and classroom activities.

  • Collaborate with colleagues, specialists, and support staff to support student achievement.

  • Implement classroom management strategies that promote positive student behavior.
